Don't Compare Averages

چکیده

We point out that for two sets of measurements, it can happen that the average of one set is larger than the average of the other set on one scale, but becomes smaller after a non-linear monotone transformation of the individual measurements. We show that the inclusion of error bars is no safeguard against this phenomenon. We give a theorem, however, that limits the amount of “reversal” that can occur; as a byproduct we get two non-standard one-sided tail estimates for arbitrary random variables which may be of independent interest. Our findings suggest that in the not infrequent situation where more than one cost measure makes sense, there is no alternative other than to explicitly compare averages for each of them, much unlike what is common practice. The presentation at the workshop will have a guaranteed surprise effect!

Approximate Analytical Bootstrap Averages for Support Vector Classifiers

We compute approximate analytical bootstrap averages for support vector classification using a combination of the replica method of statistical physics and the TAP approach for approximate inference. We test our method on a few datasets and compare it with exact averages obtained by extensive Monte-Carlo sampling.

An Approach to Extending the Hurewicz Ergodic Theorem to Two-sided Averages

In this paper, we strive to connect the ways of thinking about ergodic theory throughout most of the twentieth century to more recent works. Specifically, we consider the forward time averages seen in the Birkhoff, Hopf, and Hurewicz ergodic theorems and compare them to results about other averages considered more recently, which include going forward and backward in time. Our exploration takes...

A Statistical Mechanics Approach to Approximate Analytical Bootstrap Averages

We apply the replica method of Statistical Physics combined with a variational method to the approximate analytical computation of bootstrap averages for estimating the generalization error. We demonstrate our approach on regression with Gaussian processes and compare our results with averages obtained by Monte-Carlo sampling.

P-averages of Diffusion Tensors

For positive semi-definite tensors like diffusion tensors in the plane it is possible to calculate several different means or p-averages. These are related to p-norms for functions, but produce mappings rather than numbers as means. We compare these means for various values of the real parameter p. One important future application is the filtering and interpolation of tensor fields in Diffusion...

Don't panic.

Is it worse than having a root canal? My inner snivelling coward was shamelessly rearing its head. And childbirth? How does it compare with that?
